Over the years we have seen many object-based horror films. I mean the entire Conjuring Franchise is basically one giant set-up for the next “cursed object” film. I was lucky enough to get a chance to watch Corin Hardy’s latest horror film Whistle which is hitting Shudder on May 8th.
It stars Dafne Keen (Logan) as Chrys, a mysterious, goth new girl who finds a strange whistle in her locker on her first day of school.
It belonged to the star basketball player who burned to death six months earlier.
Naturally someone blows the whistle at a pool party – unlocking a serious of unfortunate events that has now summoned their future deaths to hunt them down.
From there we get a whole lot of blood and gore mixed with the classic high school horror story of these kids scrambling to understand what’s happening as their classmates start dying one by one – in increasingly more brutal ways.
Whistle doesn’t stray far off course; it delivers some truly creative and disgusting on-screen deaths. The supporting cast feels fleshed out and not just throw aways as you wait for their demise. Plus, who doesn’t love seeing Nick Frost in a horror movie.
If you want a fun throwback horror, you know where its heading, then Whistle will take you there while delivering some unhinged kills and a sensibility to its characters giving real weight to what’s happening. A perfectly fun cursed-object, high school horror, that should satisfy horror fans.
Four out of Five. Check it out!
