Gloucester County’s Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) will be holding a class for new members May 20-21. The course, which will be held in the County’s Emergency Operations Center, will prepare residents to assist their community during emergency situations and various community events.
The free class will run from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. on both days and is a required step for individuals to become a certified CERT member.
Operations Chief Jim Pike explained that Gloucester County CERT stays trained and prepared to help with basic First Aid, disaster preparedness and recovery, search and rescue, fire safety, and other potential threats to the community. This group of volunteers also help with traffic needs during community events. CERT members are not first responders but are here to help the community when disaster strikes.
CERT volunteers can offer their time as often as they want, or as little as they want. There is no set time commitment to join CERT.
“I just like being part of something that can help the community,” Pike said. “So, this is a way for me to give back.”
