NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) – The USS Boise will return to Naval Station Norfolk from its deployment Friday.
The Los Angeles-class attack submarine, under command of Cmdr. Scott Luers, was awarded for the 2014 Battle Efficiency for Submarine Squadron Six. It left in July 2014 and steamed more than 37,000 nautical miles operating in the U.S. Fifth Fleet, U.S. Sixth Fleet and U.S. Seventh Fleet areas of responsibilities.
Boise visited ports in Oman, Bahrain, United Arab Emirates, Greece and Spain. The submarine’s mission was multi-faceted, according to a news release from the Submarine Force Atlantic Public Affairs office. The office said it supports special force operations, disrupts and destroys enemy’s military and economic operations at sea and provides early strike from close proximity.
Boise was built by Newport News Shipbuilding and commissioned in 1992. The 360-foot submarine is the second naval ship to be named in honor of the capital of Idaho. The crew has 13 officers and 116 enlisted Sailors.
