Jeff Heller, US Navy

Jeff has proudly served in the US Navy for the past 22 years (as of this coming September) and continues to do so. In those 22 years, Jeff has completed 10 deployments, served on 6 ships, and had only had 5 years of shore duty.

During this time, Jeff not only works hard at his command, but he also takes time to serve in his community. As I am a teacher, Jeff has spent almost as many hours volunteering at after school activities as I have. In the past, Jeff has earned not only title of Volunteer of the Year at my former school, but he also won as a City-Wide Volunteer of the Year.

Jeff is also a member of a charity running group. The Nerd Herd, of which he is a part, has raised $85,000 for StupidCancer.org since 2013. That’s an amazing feat for a group of less than 20 individuals.

Due to his increase in sea time, Jeff hasn’t spent as much time volunteering or being as active in his charity organization, but he still offers his assistance any time he can at school and city-wide events, and for Nerd Herd Running. Jeff is a a great role model for what today’s Sailors should strive to be: hard-working individuals who are committed to being the best they can be – both in the military and in the community.
