After 8 nominations, Bob Newhart finally wins Emmy

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Bob Newhart has finally gotten his first Emmy, for his guest shot on “The Big Bang Theory.”

A tearful Newhart told reporters backstage that at one point, he’d given up on winning an Emmy, and wouldn’t submit material because he “didn’t want to go through…the disappointment.”

Newhart is 84 — and is one of the most beloved stars on TV, with shows stretching back more than five decades. He had previously been nominated for the award seven times.

The HBO biographical movie about Liberace was the top winner at the Creative Emmy Awards last night. “Behind the Candelabra” took eight statuettes for technical and other achievements.

It will have seven more nods at Sunday’s Primetime Emmy Awards.
