Arcade Fire confused by fans’ love for free downloads

Arcade Fire have been left baffled by the avalanche of online file-sharing because music fans will regularly buy expensive coffee but expect to get records for free.

The Canadian rockers insist they are not bothered about advances in music technology changing the way consumers listen to records, but they cannot understand where fans’ priorities lie.

Frontman Win Butler tells Q magazine, “I mean, I don’t necessarily feel qualified to personally fight against cultural changes. It’s kind of like having an opinion about… the weather or something like that. It’s just happening. I think it’s good to stand up for artists’ rights and I do think as it stands there’s a general problem with the idea of music and film as, like, infinite content. That well runs dry pretty fast if you have access to everything all the time.”

Fellow bandmember Richard Reed Parry adds, “There’s that weird dichotomy where people go and spend six dollars on a fancy coffee and think that records are free. Something’s got to give.”
